Airport Commissions Two New Firefighting Units

Tuesday, August 15, 2017

Today, the A.B. Won Pat International Airport, Guam (GIAA) will commission two new firefighting units and add it to its Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Fleet. The two new units are custom made fire fighting vehicles manufactured by Rosenbauer America, to specifications and are funded by an FAA grant of $1.25 million dollars awarded to GIAA in late 2015.

"The two new Rosenbauer units modernizes our fleet with the 2nd custom manufactured fire truck for the Airport, and a rapid intervention vehicle. This brings our fleet number to seven ARFF units protecting our Airport and runways, stated Peter Roy Martinez, Deputy Executive Manager. "We thank the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the grant funding that allowed us to modernize our fleet, and to meet and exceed standards for response to any emergency at our facilities," he continued.

The two newest units are ARFF Unit #6, a Rosenbauer Panther 6x6, Class 5 Rapid Intervention Vehicle and ARFF Unit #7, an Air Wolf FAA Class 3 Rapid Intervention Vehicle Fire Fighting Vehicle. FAA designated Guam's Airport as an "Index E" category airport. Under that index, the Guam Airport must meet a minimum 6,000-gallon water capacity by its fleet, and respond to any point in the airfield in under three minutes. "Regularly, we conduct response drills, and annually, the FAA tests our response and inspects our maintenance records for the fire trucks," stated Mr. Martinez. "The A.B. Won Pat International Airport surpasses the standards, and stands ready for any emergency," Mr. Martinez concluded.
