Airport Police K-9 Teams Pass TSA Annual Certification/Inspection

The A.B. Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam is pleased to announce that all four K9 teams of the Airport Explosives Detection Unit successfully passed their annual certification inspection. Airport Police Officers and their partner canines were evaluated on island by the Transportation Security Agency's (TSA) Jason Burnett of the TSA National Explosives Detection Team Program out of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

TSA's assessment of our K-9 Unit took place August 13-15, 2019. Evaluation was conducted on of searching for explosives in indoor and outdoor aviation environments that include the Airport Terminal, Integrated Air Cargo Building, Baggage system area, and parking lots. Assessment was made on the Team's performance in a normal airport operating environment that presents many challenges to focus and attention such as passenger crowds and movement, enormous amounts of baggage and boxes with foreign smells and the din of airport announcements, aircraft noise, moving vehicles and busses. All teams performed successfully and were recertified.

"We are extremely proud of the successful performance of our officers and their canine partners. Officer Juan D. Manibusan, handler of "Mmace", Officer Robert J. Umadhay, handler of "Rex", Officer Mark S. Calvo, handler of "Mango" and Officer Randy E. Chaco, handler of "Sam", are all commended for their ability to meet and exceed TSA's stringent requirements and standards in this highly specialized field of public safety in an aviation environment," stated Tom Ada, GIAA Executive Manager. He continued, "They are a vital component not only to the safety of our operations, but also one of the most popular in engaging our community as active demonstrators to our school children with the ability to influence and inspire future career paths at the Airport.
