$10.4M in FAA grants for Safety and Passenger Enhancements
Wednesday, October 1, 2025
In its continued effort to enhance the safety as well as passenger experience at Guam’s only commercial airport, the A.B. Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam (GIAA) was awarded $10.4 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) competitive grant program. The funding is earmarked to reconstruct passenger loading bridges as well as for assessment and design to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities and for a fully integrated fire alarm and suppression system.
“We are continuously seeking funds to improve the passenger experience and invest in modern infrastructure to serve our passengers, with safety, security and convenience for terminal users as the highest priority,” stated John M. Quinata, GIAA Executive Manager. “These grants address essential aspects for useability of terminal facilities for all passengers, employees and visitors at the Guam International Airport.”
Replacement and reconstruction of passenger loading bridges, the majority of which was put into use since 1996—and some that were damaged by Typhoon Mawar—are a high priority for the GIAA. The funding addresses reconstruction/replacement of five of the nineteen loading bridges at the main terminal.
Additionally, the design study to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities at the Guam International Airport is to improve accessible routing as well as places within the terminal and will allow the Airport to identify the best use of facility and consideration for future construction to ensure the terminal accommodates all types of customers, and equal convenience for those with disabilities. Lastly, as the airport has grown in square footage, a fully integrated fire alarm and suppression system will efficiently encompass all areas of the terminal, with initial assessment and design funding.
Executive Manager Quinata concluded, “With the support from Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Joshua Tenorio, we thank the Federal Aviation Administration for these federal funds to address these critical projects that will serve our terminal users well into the future.”
