$31.1M Awarded to the GIAA Under Competitive FAA Capital Grant for Terminal Apron and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project

Tuesday, February 27, 2024

To improve the safety of aircraft parking and taxiway areas, the A.B Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam (GIAA) was awarded $31.1 million in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) competitive grant funding toward the GIAA Terminal Aircraft Apron and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project. Grant funding was awarded in Fall 2023 from the FAA Discretionary Funds under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and the GIAA is nearly ready to commence this long-awaited project in March 2024.

"Although passengers—during their arrival and departure experiences—may not immediately feel the difference this investment in our aircraft apron and taxiway areas may have once completed, it is an important aspect of aircraft and airport safety,” stated Artemio “Ricky” Hernandez, Ph.D., Acting Executive Manager. “We look forward to breaking ground on this project next month and thank Governor Leon Guerrero and Lieutenant Governor Tenorio for their continued support for this and all of the GIAA’s capital improvement projects."

The GIAA Terminal Aircraft Apron and Taxiway Rehabilitation Project is identified in the GIAA’s Airport Capital Improvement Program with the FAA. Under this FAA AIP discretionary grant, the cost split for the apron and taxiway project is 90% from federal funds and 10% from GIAA capital improvement funds.

Dr. Hernandez concluded that, "Once again, we express our thanks the FAA for their continued support of Guam’s only commercial airport through the funding of this much needed rehabilitation of the parking and aircraft movement areas surrounding our main terminal building."
