Guam Airport Extended Runway Passes FAA Inspections; more than $70M invested in project

Monday, May 11, 2015

“This is just one of the projects at the airport that is making Guam a more attractive, business-friendly environment for potential investors. The extended runway allows the use of planes that can fly from Guam to the U.S. West Coast.” - Governor Eddie Baza Calvo

Newly extended runway completed

Airlines can soon conduct transpacific, long haul flights to and from Guam. The Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport's extended runway passed Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) flight inspections.

GIAA Executive Manager Chuck Ada called this an exciting development for the airport and for the island.

“We are in a constant state of evolution, with a runway now able to handle fully loaded, direct flights to the US West Coast, or other long range hauls,” Ada stated. “We are taking this feature to market. We will promote aggressively the use of our extended runway for long haul, transpacific flights. We are the only airport in this part of the Pacific with this strategic feature. “

The project represents more than $70M in investments with FAA providing most of the funding through various grants pursued aggressively by the Airport Authority.

Flight checks conducted

Between May 2 and 6, 2015, FAA’s Flight Inspection Services (FIS) conducted flight checks on Guam Airport’s extended Runway 6L/24R and the new Instrument Landing System.

The extension of Runway 6L/24R from 10,000 linear feet to 12,000 linear feet has been a work in progress for over five years in progressive phases. The work included extending the original runway length by 1,000 linear feet at opposite ends. Also, electrical wiring was replaced and installed for the additional length of the runway, and a new Instrument Landing System was installed to service the full length.

“During our conference call with the FAA yesterday, Runway 6L/24R and navigational systems passed all flight checks. FAA will publish that extended runway will officially open for takeoffs, arrivals, and departures on June 25, which will be June 26 on Guam,” Ada stated.

Shortly after June 26, GIAA will close its secondary runway 6R/24L while contractors install a precision approach pathway indicator system. This project will take three months to complete.

“I want to congratulate the men and women at the Guam International Airport Authority who made this happen,” Governor Calvo said. “We’re moving this island and this economy forward, and the men and women of GIAA are playing a large role in that.”
