GUAM’S AIRPORT TERMINAL POISED FOR A "FLOOR LIFT"

Friday, October 4, 2024

After completing the months-long government procurement process, the A. B. Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam (GIAA) is pleased to announce the Terminal Flooring Replacement project contract has been signed and will be underway. Once the project is completed, travelers will be able to smoothly roll their luggage on new terrazzo terminal flooring that will feature cultural aspects to enhance the aesthetics and passenger experience in key passenger processing areas of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) and the Guam Customs and Quarantine (GCQ)/Baggage Claim halls.

“As stewards of the island’s only commercial airport, the Airport took deliberate steps to ensure the installation of a more durable flooring material to enhance resiliency and improve passenger experience,” stated John M. Quinata, Executive Manager of the GIAA. “With the experience we had after Typhoon Mawar, it was only natural to consider a longer-lasting flooring for the millions of passengers that will traverse our Airport in the coming years.”

Terminal floors in high passenger traffic areas of the USCBP and the GCQ/Baggage Claim halls have been bare since water intrusion and severe flooding on all levels occurred during the passage of Typhoon Mawar. The decision to remove soaked carpet tiles from the USCBP and the baggage claim halls was made to avoid long delays and high costs of contracted services for water extraction and mold mitigation in the humid environment and enabled the Guam Airport to re-open the Airport for air service within just four (4) days of the declaration of COR 4 after the storm.

While the Terminal Flooring Replacement Project appears to be long delayed, the GIAA undertook all phases of the government procurement process which included review and approval by the Attorney General of Guam and the GIAA Board of Directors. “Our GIAA Board of Directors approved this project award subject to legal review at its May 30, 2024, Board Meeting, and with all the necessary approvals finally achieved, we are looking forward to working with the contractor to commence this project as soon as possible,” continued Executive Manager Quinata.

Green Community Development dba Surface Solutions won the bid and upon Notice to Proceed, will take approximately a year to complete.
