Skymark Airlines Planning Service to Guam
Wednesday, May 12, 2010
Skymark Airlines, Inc. has applied for an exemption authorizing Skymark to engage in charter services to the United States, including Guam and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Skymark’s initial plan is to operate a series of passenger charter flights between Tokyo and Guam, commencing on or about August 4, 2010.
“We’ve been in communication with Skymark on their plans to operate charters from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to the A.B. Won Pat International Airport. Just last week Skymark representatives met with Airport officials on operational and ground handling services, ” stated Mary C. Torres, Executive Manager, Acting. “The Haneda-Guam route is a service we are looking forward to receiving.”
Skymark Airlines is a low cost carrier that operates scheduled passenger service for Japan’s regional routes. If they obtain the exemption from the US Department of Transportation, Guam would be their second international destination. Skymark has chartered flights to Seoul, Korea.
In its application (Docket DOT-OST-2010-0096-0001), Skymark states that it has been qualified to engage in domestic and foreign air transportation, and has been issued the necessary economic and operating authority by its homeland government. Skymark requests that the exemption be granted for an initial period of at least two years.
“The A.B. Won Pat International Airport Authority is excited about the prospect of a new charter operation from a low cost Japanese carrier,” stated Chairman Martin Gerber. “Guam’s potential to recapture the arrivals from Japan is looking very positive.”
