Air Displays Pose Hazard; Requires FAA clearance

As the island prepares to bring in 2010, the Airport would like to advise the public that any type of air display poses a hazard to aircraft operations and requires prior approval and clearance by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Every New Year celebration, we all enjoy fireworks and laser light displays sponsored by GHRA, GVB and the hotels; they receive FAA approval and a NOTAM (Notice to all Airmen) advisory is issued so all concerned are duly informed,” stated Carlos Salas, Executive Manager. “We’d like to advise other entities who may not be aware of approval requirements and the hazards air displays pose.”

Under certain conditions, air displays are a hazard, particularly during landing or takeoff. Light displays may cause temporary flash blindness that will alter the pilot’s vision, especially if unaware of a light display. Pilots should have awareness of laser/aviation hazards and knowledge of basic recovery procedures in case of laser or bright light exposure.

Pointing a laser at an aircraft has resulted in arrests, trials and jail sentences. Law enforcement agencies have the authority to arrest individuals who threaten the safety of others from laser misuse, and several of these individuals have been prosecuted under federal law.

An Air Display must be requested formally and approved by the FAA prior to the intended display. “We just want to remind everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly,” stated Carlos Salas. “We all want a safe and Happy New Year as we welcome in 2010.”
