Airport Executive Manager Resigns
Thursday, April 22, 2010
Carlos H. Salas, Executive Manager of the A.B. Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam (GIAA) tendered his resignation to the Chairman of the GIAA Board of Directors, to take effect on May 1, 2010. In a letter to GIAA Board Chairman, Martin J. Gerber, Mr. Salas indicated he initially will take personal time off to spend with his family and his mother who resides off-island. Although he mentions no specific plans for alternate employment at this time, Mr. Salas anticipates his career will likely take a different direction within the near future.
With a wealth of experience and over 20 years in the aviation industry, Mr. Salas has been an integral member of GIAA’s management team since coming on board as the Deputy Executive Manager in April 2007 and his subsequent appointment to his most recent position in August 2008. Prior to his appointment to GIAA, Mr. Salas was the Executive Director for the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Port Authority.
These past few years, Mr. Salas has diligently focused his efforts on developing our island’s only commercial airport into a world-class transportation hub in the region. Most notable among his achievements are the various airfield and airport infrastructure improvements, the development of new air service into Guam, the completion of several revenue enhancement projects, and addition of three new airline carriers serving the Guam route.
According to Martin J. Gerber, Chairman of the GIAA Board of Directors, “Mr. Salas’ leadership and expertise guided GIAA through some of the most turbulent years the airline industry has seen in recent time.” Despite the adverse economic climate experienced throughout the airline industry, GIAA has kept its operating costs down, increased its annual net worth, and maintained favorable ratings by the FAA, its auditors and bond assessors. “More important,” adds Chairman Gerber, ” …is the fact that Carlos always took all concerns and problems to heart and despite all the challenges he faced from day to day, he never lost sight of what was truly best for all of GIAA, our island and our region.”
GIAA wishes Mr. Salas continued success in his future endeavors and new aspirations. Deputy Executive Manager, Mary Torres, will become Acting Executive Manager upon Mr. Salas’ departure.
