Airport Lights Brighter, Power Use Decreased

The lights are a lot brighter, with less power used at the A.B. Won Pat International Airport . A crew of men in orange safety vests has been working all week long in the ceilings, upgrading ballasts and retrofitting lighting equipment to garner energy savings. They will be installing and upgrading about 18,000 lamps, exit signs, occupancy sensors, parking lot inductions and other lighting or illumination components that are designed to use one-fifth to one-third the electric power, and last eight to fifteen times longer.

“It is important for the Airport to be advocates of sustainable management of resources and stewards of the environment,” stated Charles H. Ada. “Our Energy Savings Performance contract is well underway, and at its completion, replaced and upgraded components of electrical equipment and cooling systems are expected to realize a savings of over $1.3Million in power consumption a year.” The airport has historically paid an average of $563K a month to support the 767,000+ square foot facility that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Full replacement and refurbishment work on the cooling towers, chillers, air handling units and other components of the Terminal’s air conditioning system is scheduled for November.

“The Board and management is really excited in this business model that not only improves the bottom line, but is technologically advanced, leaves a lighterecological footprint, and creates a healthier and more productive place to work. These are the practical steps that lays the groundwork for a healthy, low-impact workspace that accommodates more than 1.3 million passengers a year and 2,400+ employees a day.”
