FAA Awards $5.8M for Airport Projects
Friday, October 7, 2016
October 7, 2016 – The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded the Airport five (5) separate grants that funds several projects at the Airport. These grants were formally accepted and assurances agreed to as part of the grant agreements by the Airport Board of Directors at its regular meeting of September 29, 2016. The funding will be applied to the following projects:
Terminal Building Sterile Arrival Corridor Design. This grant funds in part or a potion of the Terminal Building Sterile Corridor Modifications to the original design addresses several issues that enhances passenger flow and building efficiency. At the top of first priority projects, this capital investment will result in the construction of a 3rd floor corridor for arriving passengers, separating them from departing passengers in the current concourse area.
Design of the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Building. The Airport Authority has solicited for Architectural/Engineering Design services for a new ARFF crash barn to replace the current facility that is over 40 years old. Transferred to the Airport Authority upon closure of the Naval Air Station under the BRAC commission in 1996, the current ARFF facility was constructed in the 1970's. The FAA is fully supportive in enhancing the ARFF facility that houses new fire trucks and ensures the Airport is ready for response to any aircraft/airfield emergency under Federal Airport Regulations Part 139.
Design work to rehabilitate Apron and Ramp Area(s). Apron and Ramp areas are the operational areas where aircraft block in, park, and block out of aircraft parking gates at the Terminal. Funding will be applied to the design services to accomplish this work that ensure the safety and stability of areas supporting aircraft operations.
Airport Safety Management System (SMS) Manual and Implementation. FAA had proposed in July, a new rule that requires US airport operating certificate holder s to establish a SMS for its entire airfield environment (including movement and non-movement areas) to improve safety at airports hosting air carrier operations.
Wildlife Hazard Assessment(s) at the Guam International Airport. Annual assessments are required under Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR)Part 139. Under this regulation, Airports are required to control wildlife hazards that pose a risk to aircraft operations.
"We want to thank the FAA for their support in ensuring Guam's Airport attain the highest of standards in operating a world class airport," stated Charles H. Ada II. FAA acknowledges the importance of Guam Airports role in the Micronesian region, and the westernmost US Airport in the Pacific."
