Jeju One Step Closer to Air Services to Guam

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) had issued an Order on June 8, 2012, that allows Jeju Air Co. Ltd., a Korean low cost carrier, to conduct scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property and mail from the Republic Korea to points in the United States and beyond. Jeju’s application specifically proposed to commence services on the Pusan-Guam and Incheon-Guam routes in October 2012.

“The Order issued by the DOT brings Jeju Air one step closer to providing air services to Guam, and we are very optimistic that these services will be beneficial to both Jeju Air and the Airport,” stated Chuck Ada, Executive Manager of the A.B Won Pat International Airport, Guam (GIAA). “We are especially supportive of the planned direct service from Pusan, currently unserved from Guam.”

A contingent of Jeju Air technical staff toured Guam Airport facilities last month and discussed the utilization of a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 186 seat capacity to service the Guam route. Concurrent with their application to the USDOT, Jeju Air was processing other permit requirements to operate scheduled flights to Guam with the US Customs and Border Protection and the Guam Customs and Quarantine. Jeju officials also looked into office space, landing fees, and back offices to support their operations later this year. “Things are looking very positive and we anticipate that with this new service, we will exceed budget projections for arrivals this year,” stated Chuck Ada.
